Run for your life! Here comes another song showdown, and this time we’re pitting a band against itself. Because we can.

First, a little scheduling update. No guarantees on how long I can keep it up, but for now Song Showdown will be daily on weekdays, with a new battle going up every day at 1 eastern (and a share in the evening around whenever the hell I have time. Usually 7). Voting on a showdown will remain open for 50 hours, so there will be overlap between rounds. Friday rounds meanwhile will be open all weekend. Got it? Good. Let’s get to it.

For this round we’re looking at the Iron Maiden hit “Fear of the Dark.” Originally a single from the album of the same name it has since become a staple of their live tours as the audience now always joins in on the instrumental sections, sometimes being louder than the performers themselves. What is likely the best recorded example of this came from the 2001 Rio show, where the massive audience transformed the song with their quarter million-strong vocals. But is it better than the original?

Fear of the Dark (Album cut - 1992)

Fear of the Dark (Rock in Rio - 2002)

And if you haven’t voted yet in the showdown between Bob Seger and Metallica for best version of Turn The Page then you better go do it now, voting closes in two hours!

I used to listen to Iron Maiden a lot, the lifeguard from a summer camp I went to played it and I was hooked. I actually know a guy from El Salvador who is probably the biggest Maiden fan ever, it’s insane.

The first version I heard was Rock in Rio. It’s good. It’s really good. In fact, I think its riff/verse break-in after the second or third chorus (you know the one - Bruce yelling YEAH) is one of the punchiest punches to ever punch. That being said, I prefer the studio version. Slightly.

This reminds me that the Scorpions rerecorded a bunch of their hits a few years ago. That would be an interesting comparison.

“Hallowed Be Thy Name” will forever remain my favorite song by them. Forever.

The Rock in Rio version is so freaking awesome... One of the best song ever created, with the best interpretation ever done. So freaking nice!
